Current Research

My research focuses on investigating hideout equilibrium reactions that occur under hydrothermal conditions in the sodium sulfate – nickel oxide – water system. Hideout reactions are known to occur in the secondary coolant loops of CANDU reactors where inorganic ions such as sodium and sulfate will “hide out”, or disappear from water samples during reactor operation, but reappear in solution upon reactor cooling during shutdowns. We are interested in understanding and modeling the mechanisms of hideout formation by first isolating and characterizing potential hideout phases through scoping studies, and second measuring the thermodynamic solubility data of the hideout phases under hydrothermal conditions using high-pressure reactors. This solubility data can then be integrated into databases such that hideout can be modeled under reactor conditions.
